HOGWARTS CURRICULUM
O.W.L. exams are taken at the end of 5th year and the scores a student receives dictate which N.E.W.T. level courses they can take during 6th and 7th years. 1-5th years are required to study the core curriculum, along with 1 mandatory language course, plus 1-3 elective courses, rounding out a total of 10 required classes. The maximum number of O.W.L.s a student can achieve is 12. Each student must choose a minimum of 1 elective course, and students are encouraged to choose electives based on which N.E.W.T. level cluster they might choose in 6th year. For example, an O.W.L. of at least ‘Acceptable’ in Herbology is a required part of the Healing Magic curriculum, so a student must take Herbology for at least their 5th year.
The curriculum for 6th and 7th years is very career-oriented, and students finish the final two years of their education in “clusters,” which are categorized by different branches of magic and the careers one might pursue based on their magical strengths. There is a maximum of 7 students per cluster.
At the end of 5th year before sitting O.W.L. exams, students must list their top 3 preferences for which N.E.W.T. level cluster they’d like to study in 6-7th years. Students must receive an O.W.L. result of ‘A’ or higher in certain courses to qualify for a cluster – i.e. Healing Magic students must receive ‘A’s in Herbology and Potions, but do not need passing scores in Arithmancy or History of Magic to qualify.
Language courses have O.W.L. exams and until this year, were a mandatory part of the 6-7th year curriculum, but they are not a prerequisite for 6th year clusters, and 7th years do not sit a N.E.W.T. exam on their language course. When the Carrows took over Hogwarts, all 6th and 7th years were forced to drop their language course when Alecto’s Cultural Studies and Amycus’ Defense Magic classes became mandatory for all.
NOTE: Some canon names of courses have been updated. Please be mindful of this when making IC references. * Denotes Cultural Studies and Defense Magic classes that previously were not required for a cluster but are mandatory this year because of the Carrows.
